ASSISTING AT ORPHANAGE HOME
Lend A Hand, Make A Difference
In this programme, volunteers will be placed in an orphanage. Some placements provide volunteer accommodations within the orphanage. However, volunteers can choose to live with a local host family located within walking distance of the orphanage home.
As well as being very satisfying and rewarding, these placements can be physically and emotionally demanding. Your role as an Orphanage Volunteer is to be a big-brother or a big-sister to the children.
Your duties and responsibilities will vary in each orphanage. You may be required to help in other ways besides simply working with the children, for example helping with medical visits, housekeeping, paper recycling and gardening. You might be called upon to teach house-mothers how to clean properly, make repairs, mend clothes, plan activities, and perhaps prepare meals after the children return from school.
Once the children return from school, your role will be to assist and encourage them with their homework as well as lead them in recreational activities and play.
Teaching English may be a large portion of your focus perhaps because you will not be able to teach other subjects such as Maths or Science due to the language barrier.
You may help the children in other areas such as basic hygiene like regular teeth brushing and hand washing. Games, songs and other activities will be extremely popular with the children.
Some of the older children should be encouraged to develop skills such as computer programming, sewing, graphic design or maintenance work all of which may help them later in life to become self-sufficient adults.
